Pseudorabies virus or viral encephalitis June 08, 2018 Source: Health News Recently, the multi-center encephalitis collaboration group led by Prof. Guan Hongzhi, a neurology department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, reported for the first time in the world that pseudorabies virus (PRV) can lead to human encephalitis-related research. Related papers were recently published in the Chinese Medical Journal. PRV is also known as herpesvirus type I. Pigs are their main natural host and have previously lacked evidence of human infection. In 2017, Professor Zhang Wenhong from the Department of Infectious Diseases, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, used the second-generation sequencing technology to detect PRV in the vitreous humor of a patient with endophthalmitis. It was first confirmed that PRV can infect humans and cause endophthalmitis. The multi-center encephalitis collaboration group led by Guan Hongzhi used the second generation sequencing technology of cerebrospinal fluid to detect PRV in cerebrospinal fluid of many patients with unexplained etiology. Among them, a case of severe encephalitis provided by Professor Zhao Weili from the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng College in Inner Mongolia was first diagnosed (proband case), and then the encephalitis collaboration group in Hebei and Shandong also found cases. The team of researchers, Han Jun, Key Laboratory of Animal Epidemiology, Ministry of Agriculture, China Agricultural University, conducted serological tests on specimens. In March 2018, at the National Neurological Severe Academic Conference of the Chinese Medical Association Neurology Branch, Guan Hongzhi reported on the results of four patients on behalf of the Encephalitis Collaborative Group and won the Outstanding Paper Award. PRV encephalitis is mainly found in practitioners who are in close contact with sick pigs (meat), may be infected by skin wounds, clinical manifestations of acute onset fever, headache, seizures, disturbance of consciousness, and some patients with retinitis. Cerebrospinal fluid second generation sequencing is the main screening diagnostic method. Studies have shown that PRV encephalitis is a rare encephalitis that can be investigated, treated, and prevented, and no interpersonal infection has been found. Since 2014, the Neurology Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital has cooperated with Huada Gene to improve the diagnosis of neurological infectious diseases. In December 2016, the National Key Research and Development Program Rare Disease Cohort Research Project hosted by Zhang Yuyang, Vice President of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, launched a rare disease of the nervous system such as autoimmune encephalitis. Taking this as an opportunity, the neurology department of the hospital led the collaborative research on multi-center encephalitis, which laid the foundation for the discovery and research of PRV encephalitis.
